Yesterday we were surprised by a swarm of bees around some of the rusty gear stored out the front. Today they were still there, so a quick call to Bernhard Rihl, one of the people behind Linzer Biene, was necessary. An hour or so later he turned up with his four children, to see if the Queen Bee wanted to come home with him.

“Dad, I will stand way back here, a long way away from the bees and spray vaguely towards them gently, okay?”

It is surprising how close one can get to a swarm of bees with no protective gear, and not be worried….

After coaxing with spatula, a broom, water mist and some waiting, the bees were packed in a bucket inside a brand new hive and on their way to the Pöstlingberg and a new home.

Maybe we need some bees kept here too, for some fresh honey of our own.
